Mackinac Island

Cheboygan to Mackinac Island
Stats: 7:45 - 10:30.  13 nautical miles

We got up early (the ferry was noisily loading beside us!) and pushed off our bow into the current, which caught and helped us turn downstream.  We stopped to buy some diesel at the Cheboygan County Marina (good price, and the Harbourmaster graciously opened early to accommodate us.  THANKS!) and set off for Mackinac Island.

Most people have heard of Mackinac Island, but if you haven’t, it’s a very charming but touristy place.  No cars (except emergency vehicles) are allowed on the island so there are bikes everywhere and horse and buggy vehicles.  The place is full of museums, art galleries, stately homes and many brightly painted tourist shops, with t-shirts and fudge being favourites.

We docked, got the bikes down and cycled the eight miles around the island.  Later, we had happy hour on our boat with the folks from Fairways, Panda Bear and also a young couple with a two year old little guy named Hobbie.  We all had fun feeding Hobbie.  He’d eat almost anything!

At this point we were parting ways with our friends on Fairways and Panda Bear.   They're heading East and we're going South. Safe travels Flora, Larry, Patti and Alan!  It was a pleasure hanging out with you. We hope to catch you on our way back up.

Our slip at the Mackinac Island Marina.

Twelve feet deep and sooooo clear.  You can see every detail on the bottom.

Poser.  The bottom of Arch Rock

That's the top of Arch Rock.

And this would be the stairs leading to the top of Arch Rocks.  Over two hundred stairs to get up there.
And, another sixty-six to get to the higher level look out, which, of course, we did.

View from the top of Arch Rock.  Someone actually wrote  a message with rocks under the water.
We couldn't quite make out what it said.

"Go stand beside the plaque and I'll take your picture."
     The fort.

One of the many ferries that transport tourists from the mainland to Mackinac Island.
     Traffic!

Just one of the many tourist laying it on for the camera.
