Marathon, (NOT a race, the place)

Coming into Marathon.
Holy CROWDED!
We left Key West early and put in a good travel day, NORTH!!!!  Towards home.  The ride up to Marathon was without incident, just a regular day, a little boring as we’re far from shore and other than crab pots and waves, there’s not much to look at.

The Coast Guard was active and we could hear on the VHF as they were pulling boats over to check their safety equipment and registration.  Sure enough, one of their vessels pulled up behind our boat and followed us closely and slowly for awhile.  We were sure we were next but for some reason they suddenly took off.  Maybe because they saw the Canadian Flag and weren’t sure how to deal with us?  Maybe it was coffee break time?  We’re not sure, but we were glad to avoid the delay.

We pulled into Marathon late in the day and found a place to anchor in Sister Creek.  A guy came up in his dinghy and asked if we were Mike’s friend (we figured Mike from Midas Touch and we were right).  He turned out to be Charlie, from half moon and he helped us anchor and tie off to the mangroves.  We spent the evening chatting to Charlie, who was single handing an old sailboat.  He was waiting for his weather window to leave for the Bahamas.

The next day we met up with Jeff and Judy, from the boat Just Fakin’ it.  If you go waaaay back near the beginning of this blog, Jeff and Judy are friends from Georgian Bay whom we travelled with on our Shake-down cruise after we bought Gran Vida.  We parted ways in the North Channel as they continued to head South and we had to turn around and go home.  Well, we finally caught up with them!  We enjoyed a lovely seven hour lunch (yep, seven hours) and had a great time reminiscing and sharing news.

In Marathon we discovered “no-see-ums”.  It has been pleasantly breezy but this morning when we woke up the breeze had died down.  We began to feel all this little stings and discovered that we were being attacked by tiny little flying bugs.  They are about the size of a pin head, but man, are they annoying!
