Georgia's Swamps

The past couple of days have been spent travelling along the Intracoastal Waterway through Georgia’s swampland alongside Perfect Balance.  This terrain is a maze of inlets, rivers and waterways with a channel marked to guide the way through.  For the most part we are surrounded with low grass covered islands and the view doesn’t vary much from that.  This area is very uninhabited (could probably buy some land cheap!) and we are entertained all day by the wildlife: lots of dolphins, sea birds and unfortunately, gobs and gobs of no-see-ums.  For an hour before and after sunset you really can’t be outside.  Even inside the boat I watched as they worked their way hungrily through the screen.  We only have one screen with a mesh fine enough to keep them out, our new hatch screen.  So we closed up the boat except for the hatch over the V-berth and waited the nasty little beasts out.

Day one we stopped in the little town of Darien to take advantage of their free dock (with free hydro & water).  There we ran into the Loopers George & Martha on the boat Aunt Aggie.  We hadn’t seen them since Demopolis in Alabama.

The next morning, after a breakfast in town and some shopping, we shoved off and anchored out in the swamp.  It took us awhile to find a suitable spot to anchor due to the seven, yep seven foot tides and currents.  Once settled, we had a restful night.

Today we travelled to Savannah and tied to a dock at a marina.  It's laundry and relax day and we're eager to use their free internet to do some research on our future plan.  The farther North we travel the more that "other universe" (land life) begins to loom large.
