Well, good-bye to Florida. We’ve enjoyed your sunshine for
four and a half months but now it’s time to move on. But hey, Hello Georgia! You have some pretty decent sunshine of your own.
First stop in Georgia:
Cumberland Island. We left St.
Augustine as the sun was rising and travelled sixty odd miles, arriving at our
destination by three or so. Cumberland Island has been up there on my great
loop hit list. It is extremely beautiful
here, and that makes it a worthy stop on its own. But what is really interesting is that the island is inhabited by wild horses. Apparently there are about one hundred thirty of them and as we pulled in, there they were in all their majestic glory. Several groups were walking along the white sand beach or grazing in the fields of grass against a backdrop of cerulean blue sky. So awe-inspiring beautiful!
We anchored, rafted off Perfect Balance and headed right in to shore.
We hiked through a forest of spanish moss covered knarly oaks. It is the kind of place where you’re sure
you’re going to see a hobbit or elf come out from behind a tree (or maybe a
leprechaun??). We did see our first armidillo though. He scooted right across the path in front of us before we could get a picture. I tried climbing through the bushes to flush him out to no avail, but we had a good laugh trying!
Across the island there was a boardwalk extending across the
dunes to an absolutely beautiful wide and long natural beach. The four of us sauntered along, toes in the
water, looking for shells with holes already in them (saves drilling the holes)
for Mimi to use in the baskets she’s been weaving.
